AVG Free Edition is an effective freeware antivirus tool that allows you to keep your computer completely clean using a powerful and up-to-date virus database.
After an easy installation (smaller than previous versions), you can configure AVG thanks to an intuitive wizard. Once it's running in the background, you will barely notice it. And that was my first star for this antivirus. It does what an antivirus should do. It's almost impossible to know it is there unless it detects a virus.
Its user interface is simple and easy to use for the average user. You can obtain regular and automatic virus database updates via Internet. It also offers real-time protection of files and e-mails and scheduled and manual testing (you can deactivate the scheduled task if you wish). Version 7.5 has an improved virus detection based on better heuristics and NTFS data streams scanning. I recommend this antivirus to all those who are looking for a lightweight but efficient antivirus solution.
You must be warned that this freeware version is only available in English and you cannot use it for commercial purposes. It works under Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP, XP Pro x64 Edition, Vista, Vista x64 Edition and Linux i386. Some older operating systems such as Microsoft Windows ME, Microsoft Windows NT and Microsoft Windows 98 will only be supported until August 2008 as a minimum, although the antivirus works perfect on them.
Unfortunately, AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition does not have support for server operating systems (Windows NT Server, Windows 2000/2003 Server etc.), so if you need a corporate solution you must look for the commercial versions of this software.
Advantages:
- Fast and lightweight
- Updates automatically on a daily basis and sometimes several times during the day
Disadvantages:
- Not so great at catching win32 Trojans and some worms
- Scheduling tasks is not available in this free version
